“Oops!… I Did It Again” is a pop song written and produced in late 1999 by Max Martin and Rami Yacoub for Britney Spears’ 2000 album of the same name. The track’s musical style was strongly similar to many songs that appeared on her debut album …BOMT (1999), and its lyrics refer to love as a game. “Oops!” received predominately positive reviews from pop music critics and was nominated at the 43rd Grammy Awards in the category of “Best Female Pop Vocal Performance”. “Oops!” is generally perceived as one of Spears’ signature songs by the media and the general public.

The song was chosen as the album’s lead single and was released in March 2000 (see 2000 in music). It enjoyed similar commercial success as her debut single “…BOMT” (1998), reaching number one in many territories including Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and continental Europe. Its accompanying music video ranks among her most famous, and began to more openly express a sexually-provocative Spears.

Music video

The music video for the song was shot on a soundstage in Universal City, California from March 17-18, 2000, under the direction of Nigel Dick. The video made its world premiere on MTV’s Making the Video on April 10 at 10:30 p.m. EST, and debuted on Total Request Live two days later.

The video features Spears wearing a tight-fitting, more provocative, red catsuit. A different version of the video can be found on the Greatest Hits: My Prerogative DVD released on November 9, 2004. It has an alternate scene of Spears doing hand motions in-sync with background fire.

Spears received four stitches after a camera fell on her head during the video shoot. Spears’ mother, Lynne Spears, speculated that her daughter probably had a concussion, saying that, after she was hit, she began bleeding from the head and a doctor was called to the set. After four hours of resting she returned to work on the music video. Lynne also stated that, after the shoot, Britney flew to Grand Rapids, Michigan and slept for 17 hours before performing there on March 19. Lynne left a message with the following words on Spears’ official web site:

“These are the times that I worry most! I worry about her pushing herself too hard because she’s a perfectionist. I worry about those freak accidents that seem to occur when you work crazy hours. I obsessively worry about her flying so much. And, of course, all of the above happened this week.”
