Britney Spears' Official "Overprotected" Single Cover

Overprotected” is a Grammy Award-nominated dance-pop song by American pop singer Britney Spears released from the album Britney. It was the second single released during the first quarter of 2002 internationally and released as the third single for the U.S.

The song is another product of the pop songwriting and producing team made up of Max Martin and Rami, though the Darkchild Remix of the song was produced by Rodney Jerkins. The single was released in its original version in Europe, but as the Darkchild Remix in the U.S. Thus, there were two different music videos released to promote the song. Spears said of the song, “This is a song I can relate to on a personal basis, because I feel kind of overprotected. When I want to go out, everything has to be organized in advance. I think that other kids of my age can relate to it to a certain extent.”

In 2003, Spears was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for the song but lost to Norah Jones’s “Don’t Know Why”.

International video

For the release of the original version of the song internationally, Spears reunited with director Billie Woodruff . The video was shot in the second half of November 2001 in Los Angeles and was released on December 6, 2001 coinciding with the international single’s release.

The music video for “Overprotected” begins with Spears driving away from the intrusive media, with a part of the instrumental version of the song “Bombastic Love”, featured on the album Britney, playing. She makes her way into an alleyway and decides to enter an abandoned factory, hoping her pursuers will be thrown off course. When she enters the building she begins to dance her way around the warehouse. Spears’ dancers, having spotted her walking into the factory, follow her inside. They find Spears dancing around and joke about it, before heading into a heavy dance routine. Towards the end of the video, we see segments of Spears in a room with walls covered in pictures and articles about herself. These walls move in and out before the video ends, signifying that she is “overprotected”.

In the video Spears uses clothes of the Argentine company/signature “Kosiuko”. She decided to use these clothes in her video because she felt it was tasteful. The clothes were given to the singer by the makers, to promote their products in the American market, since they had recently opened fashion houses in Miami and other cities in America.
