Britney Spears' Official "Overprotected" Single Cover

Overprotected” is a Grammy Award-nominated dance-pop song by American pop singer Britney Spears released from the album Britney. It was the second single released during the first quarter of 2002 internationally and released as the third single for the U.S.

The song is another product of the pop songwriting and producing team made up of Max Martin and Rami, though the Darkchild Remix of the song was produced by Rodney Jerkins. The single was released in its original version in Europe, but as the Darkchild Remix in the U.S. Thus, there were two different music videos released to promote the song. Spears said of the song, “This is a song I can relate to on a personal basis, because I feel kind of overprotected. When I want to go out, everything has to be organized in advance. I think that other kids of my age can relate to it to a certain extent.”

In 2003, Spears was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for the song but lost to Norah Jones’s “Don’t Know Why”.

Darkchild Remix video

For the release of the Darkchild Remix of the song in the U.S., this video was directed by Chris Applebaum from March 2-4, 2002 on location in Los Angeles and was first aired on March 26, 2002. It starts out with Spears watching the news in a hotel, when a negative story about her comes up. Spears calls down to her bodyguard to create a decoy so she and her girlfriends can make their exit. Spears and her friends rush in an elevator, where they fool around briefly with the security cameras. A dance scene in the main lobby of the building proceeds. After this, Spears makes her way into herSUV.

The interior transforms itself into a limo like dance hall, and Spears and her friends begin to dance inside. Making their way to a destination in an alleyway, it begins to rain down on Spears and her friends. Now wet, the group dances suggestively. We also see a powerful sequence in the lobby, with strobe lights, and Spears dancing fiercely. At the end of the video, we discover that Spears and her friends dancing in the rain was the latest news story being reported on the TV.

The video faced minor controversy, as it is similar in setting to the music video of Janet Jackson’s “Son of a Gun (I Betcha Think This Song Is About You)”. Still, it was as popular as any of Spears’ previous efforts, and proved to be more popular than Jackson’s video. The video retired itself onMTV’s TRL.

Due to the public demand, “The Darkchild Remix” version of the video was aired on MTV Latinamerica and the song entered on the Official Mexican Top 100 even when the official single there was charting too.

This was the third single release in the US, while in other parts of the world, it was the second.
